To the point of direction-giving for those who do feel the
draw of God on their life, spend some time with God, and
seek out the company of people who know him. This is not
a path to "salvation" (the resources I mentioned there can
explain that better than I), it's simply the best and most
important advice I can give to anyone who wants to know
God better.
Time with God: it's going to sound antiquated, but I
suggest for this a regular practice of Bible reading and
prayer to serve as staple communication between yourself
and God. Bible resources can be found at
http://bible.gospelcom.net/
and prayer resources can
be found as you speak toward God, aloud or silently. Some
will suggest that you make the primary 2-way communication
between you and God be prayer and meditation alone, but
the problem I have with leaving the Bible out is that so
many influences will speak to your mind even when you try
to clear it. "Does God want me to change brands of
toothpaste?" No, that's a commercial you've seen. "Does
God want me to work harder?" Perhaps that's just your
boss' demands pressuring you. "Does God want me to eat an
extra bag of chips?" Well, that's probably your appetite.
"Does God want me to turn off the computer and spend time
with my wife?" That's much more consistent
with the character of God. As I say to all kinds of
people — The Bible is the voice of God, and you can get
to recognize that voice whenever your hear it only by
practice!
Company: spending time with pleasant or quality people
is something you probably want to do naturally. If you
know some half-way decent followers of Christ, try to set
some time aside to draw from them. Don't drain them with
all kinds of religious questions or act like you idolize
them, simply spend time there. If that means you have to
go to church in order to get some time, ok. If it means
you'll need to change a hobby from something alone or with
others in order to start one with these followers, it's
a small sarifice. But spending time with people who
spend time with Jesus is part of spending time with Jesus.
It's not just vicarious, and it's not just metaphorical. When
God's people are together, He's there.
I assume as I write these things that you have access to
whatever resources you like to find out more about Jesus,
and simply need a reason to follow. If there is really
some information you don't have, honest questions you need
answers to, send me an email or phone call. For
apologetics, reading materials, local resources, or
more in-depth discussion, you'll probably have to ask
someone who'd fall into the "company" paragraph above.
I may be able to make some educated guesses, but it's
not about me or my ability to describe it, this whole
thing is about Jesus. If you ask him for help in this, I
can pretty much assure you that you'll receive it!
